It wasn't until the 18th century that it was clearly established that Rubies and Sapphires are of the same mineral, Corundum. Therefore, while Sapphire is typically seen as a blue gemstone, it can come in any other color than the red reserved for Rubies. Together Sapphire and Ruby are the second hardest mineral on the earth, surpassed only by diamonds. This is in part to their crystal forms of dipyramidal and rounded barrel shapes.
