Ammonites are cephalopod mollusks that filled the seas of the Cretaceous Period over 60 million years ago. The creature occupied the larger segment of the shell and filed the smaller segments with gas to float. Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder named them after the ram horns of the Egyptian god Ammon.
