JADE is a name shared by two different minerals. The first, called Nephrite, is a calcium magnesium silicate with a hardness of 6. The second is a slightly harder (6.5 - 7) sodium aluminum silicate called Jadeite. Due to the toughness and beauty of the stone, it has been long been carved into weapons, tools, ornaments, and ritual objects.
