Bright, precious Emerald in dark matrix. Formed in interlocking crystals in pegmatites, found in veins in sheets of rock. Nice handheld specimen with deep color and a smattering of Pyrite crystals. This rough specimen stands upright on one end. It has a small painted number on the plainest side, used to catalogue collections, on the back.

EMERALD is a variety of beryl made green by the presence of chromium or vanadium. The natural prismatic crystal inspired the rectangular “emerald-cut” to maximize material. Aztecs associated it with the Quetzal bird of reincarnation. Alchemists associated it with Mercury, conductor of souls, messenger to the Gods.
