Used by cooks and healers since ancient times, the heavy pestle crushes ingredients in the mortar bowl. This is a clean, safe, easy way of grinding up medicines or herbs. The prehistoric material honors the oceans of time our Earth has survived. It is a dark reddish-brown marble full of white sparkly Orthoceras fossils.
ORTHOCERAS (“straight horn”) were prehistoric mollusks resembling squids who swam over 400-million years ago. The nautiloid could force water through the shell to propel itself or fill the chambers with air to rise and sink. The soft body lived in the last open-ended segment at the large end of the conical shell. This bottom-dweller had large eyes, a beak, and tentacles, and ranged in size from under one inch to 14 feet long.
